With plans for a store within the Beijing Daxing Airport, MUJI posed the question - how do you create a store with no boundaries?
The team’s response takes advantage of the principle of Ma - the interval or pause in space. Like a clearing in a forest, the design emphasizes the importance of deliberate emptiness in defining a space.
Along the store perimeter, a rhythm of voids welcomes travelers inward. Meandering pathways guide them through the space, encouraging discovery and removing them from the hectic bustle of the airport. Product displays are oriented to create intentional pockets of rest that coexist with spaces of shopping.
For the display design, the approach is a kit-of-parts - creating a base module that can grow and adapt to MUJI’s wide range of products.
A Store as a Landscape Three peaks orient visitors within the landscape of MUJI to GO, with the highest peak centralized at the customer service areas.
